The Undomestic Mom Podcast

Jul 12, 2022

In today's episode, Scottie Durrett and I look honestly at "mommy martyrdom" and why it's the sleepy thief of joy that no one is talking about.

Throughout the episode, we discuss:

  • Being aware of external influences and then checking in with your intuition so you can do what's best for you and your family
  • Chasing the need for proof that we are worthy of motherhood with constant exhaustion competitions
  • The idea that every mom is a good mom, but when motherhood is your only contribution to society, it feels so unimportant
  • Realizing there are no awards for doing everything “right” in motherhood
  • Why you need to be at the top of your priority list - setting an excellent example for your kids, taking care of your body for longevity, being the main character of your own story
  • What moms can gain from prioritizing themself and the domino effect it has on everyone in their life; more confidence, better boundaries, and clarity because they were rested.
  • Thinking that you’re the best mom by requiring the least
  • The need for accountability in mommy martyrdom and understanding that you can simultaneously put your needs first and be a good mom.
  • How marriages are positively impacted by taking time for self-care
  • The need to get clear on what you need in life. How mommy martyrdom encourages you to get attention through negativity, making you afraid to be happy because you fear you won't get any attention if you are.
  • Trusting the warning signs when something is wrong in your life, not gaslighting yourself into thinking it's not a big deal.
  • Examining what you are spending your money on and why you're doing it - if you aren't sure what you're prioritizing, check your bank statement and calendar, and they will tell you.
  • Understanding trauma's role in self-care and that not everyone is ready to start the journey to discover why they aren't thriving.
  • Publicly talking about these struggles so other moms know they are not alone
  • Being present with your kids is much easier when you're taking care of yourself because you're rested enough to have the capacity to do it.
